I know, it’s a heavy topic. Why couldn’t I just focus on a fun Christmas-themed blog instead? Because it’s reality and I’m a family law attorney who gives a damn. I can’t just sit back and ignore it.
Historically, the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve is a quiet stretch for divorce cases (2020 being an exception due to the pandemic). In theory, couples are trying to stick together and make the holidays a good, stress-free time for their families. That should be a good thing, but life doesn’t play out like a fairytale.
If tensions were already high going into December, they’re not going to disappear through holiday magic. There are a number of reasons domestic abuse picks up this time of year:
When you combine all of these elements, you’ve got yourself a dangerous setup with the potential to escalate into physical or verbal assault. If you’re currently in this situation or you have a close friend or family member facing it, there are ways to get help.
If you’re in imminent danger of violence or in fear for your life, then call the police if possible. If you’re able to escape, then get away quickly and stay with a friend or family member.
Once you’re in a safe place, you can contact your local police department to report the assault. From that point on, you’ll work with an attorney who will help you fill out an affidavit and petition, then file with the court. You can learn more about the legal steps here.
Maybe you’re not being abused but you’ve noticed that somebody else has bruises (or has been covering up injuries), seems depressed or withdrawn when they used to be happy, or hasn’t been showing up to work or gatherings. If that’s the case, this article from Women Against Crime has some very helpful information that can be a good starting point.
